I live in one of fairly many Grade II Listed (http://www.heritage.co.uk/apavilions/glstb.html) buildings in the United Kingdom, much older but not quite as large as old Steve's, and there is no surprise when purchasing such a building that you are significantly restricted in what you can do to it.
England has a very long history of common people being subject to the will & whim of the rich & powerful & connected.
The USA exists precisely because some of those common people got tired of such treatment and made it clear they would do with their land what they saw fit.
What is it about the past that you don't like, Jobs?

When people stop shelling out good money, time & resources of their own (not confiscated-at-gunpoint taxpayer funds) for old things, maybe it's time to stop preserving what people don't actually want and start replacing it. Remember, Apple does not maintain a "museum of past Apple products" because those products no longer sold are, by current standards, failures - they may have been great then, but nobody wants to put up their own money for them today.
Yes, there is a valid argument and sociopolitical expenditure to preserve things which may not be of sustained current value. Question is where to draw the line. AFAIK, nobody actually wanted that house, and few are truly enamored by Spanish Revival architecture to a degree worth the substantial cost of preservation of such an example, and fewer still are truly enamored by the decedent who built it. The argument, IMHO, centers more around those wanting to either criticize Jobs at any opportunity, or whose relevance hinges on ability to find old homes they can spin as "historic".
Suitable acreage is costly in that region. The cost of preserving the "interesting creation" far exceeds the cost of replacing it with another interesting creation; as none are interested in putting up the money to preserve the former, those interested in putting up the money to create the latter win.
And yes, the old gives way to the new. Physical things are not important of themselves. It's not about wanton destruction for sake of destruction, it's about moving forward and removing obstacles thereto.

Once I went to Best Buy to get a toslink cable with a mini plug end for my macbook. The employee in the department asked if I needed help. I responded that I need a toslink cable with a miniplug end rather than the regular. The employee in charge of the cable section had never heard of such a thing. I described it but the employee had this look that suggested I was confused. LOL
Local retail would be worth a little extra cost if employees were actually trained to be knowledgable in the products. That would require paying decent wages to knowledgable staff. Sadly the retail outlets like to charge more and pay minimum wage to people who are expected to know the location of items on shelves and that's it. Most of the employees in Best Buy that I've encountered could have been replaced with grocery store clerks and the service would be the same. I'm not insulting the workers. Just pointing out the expectations of the clerks in these places. And of course if you want employees to be interested in the product line more, they should be paid more.

Why hasn't there been a 'universal' version of Photoshop yet? Because the hard core digital imaging people are hanging on to their G5's.

There's a huge difference between merging in concepts of the UI, user-friendly software distribution, media access and what you describe.
It is very unlikely that Apple's engineering and marketing would destroy what they've worked to build for so long, IMHO. How are you so certain that they'll be bringing all the bad stuff along with the good stuff? Seriously - do you really think that Apple's talent are as utterly foolish that you make them out to be?

They've proven themselves beyond contempt by insisting that in-app subscriptions be the same or lower on the App store than direct, despite the fact that they demand 1/3 of all the selling price. They've added an 'App' store for OSX proper and have the same 30% "grab" for everything on there. They're advertising and bragging about bringing iOS features back to OSX. I'm just doing simple math here. You can make 1+1 = 1 if you say it's a bigger one, but in my world, 2 is still the more likely answer.

What you or I may want in OSX is irrelevant to both Apple and Steve Jobs. Steve has essentially said that consumers don't know what's best for them and that it takes a visionary to move forward. We know Steve's 'vision' is smaller/thinner/more mobile at almost any cost. So I'm not saying it will happen like that, but that it's looking more likely every day. Only time will tell for sure. But I know if it does happen, I'll no longer have an interest in OSX. I don't want Apple deciding for me what I can or cannot buy or watching developers get 1/3 their gross taken from them (same % as a typical injury lawyer BTW. You don't get paid until they get paid FIRST and your bills 2nd and you last; in this case it would be taxes instead of bills). You can think it's good/fair/right. I'm sorry, but these video stunts are just bogus and have no credibility. Clearly on 3 of them the person holding the phone is applying a lot of vice-like pressure and squeezing the phones as hard as possible. You can see the arm shaking from applying so much force and the thumb turns red. Do they think people are that stupid? That is far removed from realistic usage of the phones, whereas the problem with the iPhone 4 is just touching it in a certain spot.
Apple is making it worse because instead of just being honest and forthcoming, they are now lying and trying to distract from the real issue. People will be understanding and wouldn't care if Apple would just be contrite, educate people about facts and make an attempt to rectify the situation. They did that by giving away the bumpers and sharing the data about dropped calls which helps their case that it is still a great phone, but everything else they have done damages their brand. Well I don't know about you but if I saw someone beating the **** out of someone else while I'm working I would certainly get involved. And I would expect the same consideration from others.

Also remember most work places (Retail) tell there employees not to get involved really for fear of the employee getting hurt.

After the fact yes you can look back on it but during the fact you have that endless loop you have to break out of that is very hard to do.
In something like that first thing I would of done is called 911. Response time for something like that should be 1-2 mins tops the nearest cop should be there.
I remember calling the cops on a domestic fight and from 911 to the cop showing up it was under 2 mins and on that one the cop was not going no come in sirens a blazing for they want to use the shock of lights be shown on them to break it up. This is something they would come in with sirens on.

1. Time Capsule - seems kind of cool. Would have to look into it a bit more, but the price doesn't seem too bad considering that it's an N-router and a hard drive. I would hope that Apple would also make the wireless drive work on older AEBS like they promised, but maybe that's crazy talk.
2. iPhone/iPod Touch - Yay for the SDK, although I am a little perplexed about the locator thing. My Helio Ocean has had a google maps feature with a locator function since it came out in like April, and it's very exact in telling you where you are - none of this multi-block radius crap.
The other thing is the paid update, combined with the updates being included on new, less expensive Touches. LAME. LAME. LAME. Apple should get reamed by customers on this.
3. iTunes rentals/Apple TV2 - I think the rentals are ok - pretty much the same as pay-per-view, except should be a better selection. I like the option for HD. I do wish that the time frame was 48 hours, and I also wish that the movies came out on the dvd release date and not a month later.
As for Apple TV2, I think it was a step closer toward making it useful. It really should just have a full browser and a dvd/blu-ray drive. The lower price is helpful, but keeping the 40 gig hard drive is kind of an insult.
4. MacBook Air - What can I say? A comparatively weak processor, no graphics card, no user replaceable battery, soldered-in RAM, 80 gig iPod hard drive or $1,000 dollar SSD, mono speaker and $1800?!?! I'm not a fan of the fat bezel around the screen either. I do like the multi-touch, and I think the optical drive sharing with other computers is pretty neat.
Overall, I have to say I'm disappointed. I am looking to buy two macbook pros but wanted to wait for updates. I briefly considered just going ahead and getting them now anyway, but decided not to. I am confused as to why Apple would come up with new tech and NOT put it in their pro line, but they'll have to sooner or later and I'll wait until they do.
I don't think the disappointment is limited to whiners on these forums. Look at AAPL today - down over 6% since this morning.

I have to say, when I first heard about the iPhone I let my Verizon account go, because I knew I wanted to get the iPhone. Well AT&T sucks up in my part of the woods. We have terrible coverage. My girlfriend uses Verizon - let's just say, I can't wait for Verizon to start offering the iPhone.

Oh i'm sure there will be LOTS of technology in the house.
I bet he'll be able to control everything via an app on his iPhone.
The house itself doesn't need to be HUGE. He can still apply a lot of technology into the house making it worth millions!
